St. Louis Gooey Butter Cake

A tender yeast-style base under a crackly, buttery filling that stays gloriously soft in the center.

Make the recipe

  1. Heat the oven to 350°F and grease a 9-by-13-inch pan.
  2. Mix cake mix, melted butter, and one egg. Press evenly into the pan.
  3. Beat cream cheese until smooth; beat in two eggs and vanilla, then the confectioners' sugar.
  4. Spread over the base and bake 30 to 35 minutes. The center should remain slightly soft.
  5. Cool, dust with confectioners' sugar, and cut into small squares.
