Editorial standards

Every card keeps its source, status, and story.

The Our Midwest Recipe Box Editorial Team maintains the archive and documents what is known, what remains uncertain, and what has changed.

Source and attribution

Each entry identifies the supplied source card or contributor note. The card image remains visible beside its transcription. We do not assign a date, location, author, or community connection without support in the source material or contributor documentation.

Transcription and human review

OCR may assist private transcription, but extracted words are not treated as verified facts. Entries labeled “machine transcribed” should be checked against the visible card. A “reviewed” label is added only after an editor checks ingredients, measurements, steps, title, and source notes.

Images and authenticity

The supplied card is the official source image. When finished-dish photography is added, it must be original or used with documented permission and must accurately represent that recipe. AI-generated dish images are never presented as photographs of the authentic recipe.

Corrections

Corrections should identify the recipe, the suspected error, and supporting information. Consequential corrections—especially allergens, preservation, time, temperature, or measurements—receive priority. Contact details will be added before public submissions open; until then, use the recipe submission form to document a correction.

Food-safety review

Historical instructions do not override current safety guidance. Recipes involving preservation, raw foods, meat, poultry, seafood, or long room-temperature storage may receive a modern note or remain unpublished. See the food-safety policy and sources.

Last substantive review

August 4, 2026. The policy is reviewed when the editorial workflow, submission process, or source standards change.
