Make the recipe
- Place flour in a large bowl; cut in shortening until crumbly.
- Whisk gg water and vinegar in a small bowl.
- Gradually add to crumb mixture; toss until dough holds together. Shape into a rectangle, wrap, and chill 30 minutes or overnight.
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Toss apples with lemon juice.
- Combine sugar brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg; add to apples and toss to coat.
- Transfer filling to a 13 x 9-inch baking dish; dot with butter.
- Roll dough to fit the top, place over filling, trim and flute edges. Brush with egg and milk; cut slits in top.
- Bake 40-50 minutes or until crust is golden brown and apples are tender. Cool on a wire rack.
