Make the recipe
- Dissolve the yeast in warm water.
- Scald the milk.
- Add the sugar, salt, shortening, and eggs.
- Add the yeast mixture and stir well.
- Add the flour 1 cup at a time; beat with a wooden spoon until well mixed.
- Grease the bowl and top of dough, cover with a towel, and let rise in a warm place.
- Punch down, let rise again, then roll out and cut out the doughnuts.
- Let rise, fry in deep shortening at 400°F (205°C) until golden brown, then roll in sugar or frost.
